To Our Community Members:

Since its inception in June 2001, Avalon Park and Preserve has enriched our local community by providing a gateway into our natural environment.  Avalon offers people of all ages a place for reflection and inspiration.  Both children and adults are drawn to this living exhibit of our natural world that is a vital component to community.   To our surprise, children in particular seem to be drawn to the freedom of movement and the excitement of discovery that this open space provides.

Inspired by their enthusiasm, we’d like to offer young adults the opportunity to participate in various hands-on experiential learning programs.  Our goal is to inspire children to begin thinking critically about community, leadership and the importance of land stewardship. Educating our youth about ways to balance development and open space conservation is vital to the success of any community.

With the help of local businesses, Avalon will begin to establish a monetary fund that promotes children’s involvement in environmental stewardship and outdoor leadership. Through your participation in Turtles on the Town, your business will be recognized for its role in supporting youth-initiated stewardship and leadership programs.

Here’s how it works…select artists work together with sponsors to create a unique design that will be applied to the surface of a 2 x 3 foot fiberglass turtle.  Once completed, the turtle will be displayed in a public location of the artist and sponsor’s choice.  Finally, the turtles will be auctioned live in autumn 2008.  Proceeds will go toward establishing a monetary fund used to award grants to local youth and community programs sponsored by Avalon Park and Preserve.

If you or your business would like to be involved in this unique event, please contact Katharine Griffiths at Avalon Park and Preserve at 631-689-0619.
